![]() Polygon sat down with Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma and Tears of the Kingdom director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. Early in the game, Rauru himself appears in spirit form to Link and serves as a key guide in Link’s journey to find Zelda. Their technology allows Link to build machines to traverse the land and overcome challenges. In lending Link his arm, Rauru gave the hero the means to go out into the wide world of Hyrule and realize the carefully laid plans of Princess Zelda.ĭespite the fact that the Zonai are not physically present in Link’s era, this ancient civilization forms a foundational part of the game’s world. It’s not much later that Link meets a spirit version of Rauru, the first king of Hyrule and a character who belongs to a race of creatures called the Zonai. At the very beginning of the game, Link doesn’t really know what’s going on, but he wakes up with a mysterious appendage that’s not his - and that allows him to harness incredible powers. Nintendo also has a history of putting a lot of thought into its titles, so it may not be that big of a surprise if the design for the Master Sword has something to do with the story of Tears of the Kingdom. Before players meet Rauru in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, they see his arm. Only time will tell if any of the theories turn out to be true, but a game's title can convey a lot about what kind of game it will be. Everything from the name of the game to the characters shown in trailers has had theories surrounding it. There are already countless videos and articles talking about possible theories for Tears of the Kingdom. Like with any new game in a major franchise, there are going to be a ton of theories about possible directions the game's mechanics and narrative can go. Nintendo also stated it didn't want to reveal the game's title too soon because it might show some spoilers for the game. Although players may not have realized the significance of it at the time, it subtly hinted at the fact that the Master Sword in Breath of the Wild had not been used in 100 years. In the Breath of the Wild title card, the Master Sword's tip is old and rusted. On the other hand, Link may have lost his arm and the Master Sword in a battle and the Sheikah Slate will be the thing that heals both Link's arm and the Master Sword.īasing this theory solely on the title card of Tears of the Kingdom may seem like a stretch, but there is a precedent for it. If that's the case, then it may also be possible that some of the power the sword held was transferred to Link, which gives him the new abilities seen in the trailer. It is entirely possible that a rot has come over Hyrule as a result of Ganon's death, and this rot could have ruined the Master Sword. The Master Sword could be related to the new mysterious arm and powers that Link wields. Astute and keen-eyed fans will also remember that in the early trailers for Tears of the Kingdom, the Master Sword appears to be broken and missing its tip. It also resembles Link's new mystical arm shown off in several trailers. ![]() The end of the sword is more jagged than a normal blade, and it is a dark brown color with green streaks running along it that resemble the runes seen in Breath of the Wild. In the title card for Tears of the Kingdom, the Master Sword doesn't look like any normal blade. ![]()
